“Eating rice cakes is like chewing on a foam coffee cup, only less filling.” Dave Barry

What a day! The sun is shining the birds are singing and I’m planted on my deck writing for the next few hours. Inspiration is everywhere except in my hands and fingers. Distraction abound. Music’s on the iPod. What’s that?  A Blue Jay? Then there’s the fence that’s going up two backyards from me with the sound of power hammers and disjointed conversations.  Well maybe if I turn up mine a little louder.  I really should stain this deck again. Where was I? Last night’s food!

The burgers turned out great. We ate a little late. A little too late but I had everything prepped and ready to go. When I came in, late, I got the eye from the trolls that live with me. Being in their 20’s they are quite capable of feeding themselves but it seems that they waited for me to play the chef again. I guess I can’t argue.  I created the situation. I created food snobs!

I like using my cast iron for burgers on my grill. The added firm crunch to the outside and sealing in the juices make for one mean burger. I sautéed onion in butter and balsamic for an added sweetness.

I’ve been experimenting with Potato Puffs. Basically smashed potatoes mixed with cheese and herbs baked in miniature muffin tins. Last night it was sweet potato and bacon. The report from the troll critics was that they were good but they prefer the Yukon Gold version with gruyere.  That’s what this is all about. I always keep in mind the words of Yoda. “Try not. Do, or do not. There is no try.”

Tonight might be a phone call for a pizza but maybe not. This weekend will be mussels on the Big Green Egg. I’ll keep you filled in.

Be well
